It’s not Governor Burgum’s fault that his Republican Party has adopted such ridiculous rules to get on the debate stage. The rules they adopted are built for two things: to keep new people off the presidential debate stage and to bring more money into the party. And luckily for Burgum, money is something he has a lot of.
He wouldn’t have a chance at all if he wasn’t rich.
So, what does the Governor do with all that money? That’s easy, he buys his way onto the stage. He knew about the donor requirement, so he’s simply paying people to donate. He offered a $20 gift card or the American Flag for merely donating a dollar. I’m not sure the Governor can brag about getting a deficit under control with this math, but what the hell, why not try?
Whoever is advising Governor Burgum, for the most part, is doing a good job. It doesn’t hurt to have a client that’s a billionaire, but nonetheless, the scheme must be working. Anytime you can give someone 20 bucks for giving a dollar, it’s going to work. Trust me, for that money, the Democrats are helping him too.
His consultants are also getting the Governor some national exposure. It’s clear they want to portray him in the beginning as that ‘good old boy’ from the Midwest. A guy that everyone would like to have a beer with. But they still need to get him to come out and punch.
They need to show the country what would be different in a Burgum administration compared to any other Republican. The problem is, I’m not sure they know how to. His talking points so far mirror what everyone else has said. His actions as Governor have been exactly what every other candidate has or would have done. His six-week abortion ban is a perfect example. Which of course means a complete abortion ban regardless of the circumstance.
In the end, the Republican Party will always come down to money. It doesn’t matter if you have new ideas or a new vision, if you don’t have money, you need not apply. Fortunately for Burgum, he has that problem taken care of.
Now he just needs to make sure he doesn’t run out of flags.
Good riding with you,
Joel
