WEST FARGO (KFGO) – Like many other cities, West Fargo had fireworks complaints during the July 4th holiday, and not only police officers, firefighters, and city leaders heard those complaints.
The issue was on Monday night’s City Commission agenda.
“I’ve heard that it is hard to enforce things now, as the ordinance is written,” one citizen said. “People have been given an inch and taken a mile, or perhaps two. Make it easier on the police and ban fireworks altogether.”
Many residents are not happy with the noise, and the potential for injuries.
Fire Chief Dan Fuller and Police Chief Denis Otterness agreed it was one of the safest years in a while, but it was busy.
Otterness said officers received 73 fireworks complaints over five days.
“Our staff were busy,” Otterness said. “It’s a challenging law to try to enforce, both from a state statute, or Century Code. Our city ordinances kind of mirror our Century Code.”
Fuller said that it may be time to look at the city ordinance again, and city commissioners agreed the issue has to be addressed.
