ST. PAUL – A one-and-a-half-billion-dollar bonding bill for state public works projects is in limbo at the State Capitol — Senate Republicans saying tax relief must come first, Democrats promising it will happen later in the session, and Republicans responding Democrats will have spent all the budget surplus by then.
Minority Leader Mark Johnson said late last week when Republicans refused to provide needed votes to pass the bill in the Senate. He said both tax relief and the bonding bill need to be approved.
Governor Tim Walz said there’s going to be a tax bill to reduce taxes but it won’t reduce the tax bill for the millionaires that the Republicans want. He said it is meant to cut the tax for the middle class..
Lawmakers are a little past the halfway point in the legislative session. After concentrating the first couple of months on social issues such as abortion and school lunches, they now must set the next two-year state budget.
