The pledge of allegiance has made its way into the news again… this time because the Fargo School Board has voted in favor of doing away with it during their meetings. Most notably because it mentions, “God,” and is not representative of everyone’s belief.
My question: Can we replace it?
Can we replace it with another pledge? In the school boards case, maybe a pledge to serve the students, community and parents. A pledge to remind them why they are there and who they are serving.
I know there were many upset by the school board’s decision to do away with the pledge of allegiance. (Admittedly, this didn’t bother me much. After all, I don’t know the last time I said the pledge of allegiance.) So, it got me thinking, why do we like the pledge of allegiance?
I think we like the feeling of community and connection. Standing as one and reciting something in unison feels good! And, we can absolutely do that – without the tie to religion!
Maybe it’s the sorority girl in me. We started off every meeting reciting our creed together. It felt good. It felt like we were connected. And, it stated all the principles we were to keep front of mind.
So, in some ways, we are keeping the pledge… maybe we call it a pledge of intention?
Just a thought…. – Amy Iler
