Walleye anglers are having lots of success using jigs and live bait rigs tipped with shiners, especially in 5-15 feet of water. Leeches and crawlers are beginning to turn fish as well. The warmer temperatures at the end of this week should result in an even better bite and more consistent action. Please note that water levels are running extremely high in lakes and rivers near the Canadian border, including within Voyageurs National Park.
This summer, anglers can participate in a fun fishing tournament and support a worthy cause! The virtual Hook, Line & Shelter Fishing Tournament is open to anglers on any Minnesota lake across seven fish categories beginning May 14 and running through Labor Day.
Minnesota fishing opener dates for the 2022-2023 fishing season for most inland waters are as follows: Stream trout: April 16; walleye, sauger, northern pike, bass (catch-and-release) and lake trout: May 14; muskie: June 4. The fishing season for crappies, sunnies, perch and catfish is continuous.

| NORTHWEST REGIONIt’s been a great week of walleye fishing on Lake of the Woods, with good numbers of walleye, including many large walleye and northern pike reported. Jigging an emerald shiner or fathead minnow is the best tactic. Please note that the Rainy River continues to run strong with high water levels. Fishing in the Bemidji area has been good for a variety of fish. Walleye continue to come from the shallows, and off the first break in roughly 12 feet of water on jigs and live bait rigs tipped with shiners. Leech Lake walleye are responding well to jigs and shiners, lindy rigs with shiners, leeches or crawlers, and slip bobbers with a leech, especially in 8-14 feet of water. The walleye bite in Detroit Lakes area lakes has been good in 7-12 foot depths, especially for those using jigs tipped with a minnow or a slip bobber and leech. | |

| CENTRAL REGIONThe walleye bite seems to improve daily on Alexandria area lakes. Anglers are having success pitching jigs and minnows into 5-15 feet of water, with the peak bite usually in the evening. The ideal tactic is to anchor at the first drop-off to deeper water and pitch jigs into shallower water. This tactic has also been successful on Lake Mille Lacs. For post-spawn walleye, use a jig tipped with a spot tail shiner or plastic. | |
