ST. PAUL, Minn. – House Democrats are proposing 150 million dollars to address Minnesota’s crime wave, with 86 million of that going to the 20 municipalities, tribal governments, and counties with the highest crime rates — most in Greater Minnesota, they say.
The sponsor, Representative Cedrick Frazier from New Hope, says the bill would provide funding to outfit every Minnesota officer with a body camera. There’s also money for community crime prevention, social workers for every mental health call, mobile crisis teams, and investigations of officer misconduct.
Republican Brian Johnson from Cambridge says Democrats have yet to bring a single public safety bill to the House floor — and that none of their proposals would do anything to increase accountability for repeat violent crimes, or for judges and prosecutors who hand out light sentences.
