Frigid weather has helped to form ice across the state and ice activities are well underway. Once you’ve determined there’s enough ice to support the weight of your vehicle (and fish house, if you’re hauling one out), there are a few things to keep in mind when you’re driving on the ice:
- Have a plan to escape if you go through. It’s not fun to think about such possibilities, but the reality is that nobody expects to break through the ice.
Watch for ice features that cause vehicles to break through. - Pressure ridges commonly cause problems for people, especially those in vehicles.
- Do not attempt to cross a stress crack with your vehicle.
Know what to do before you head out: Prepare for the possibility of breaking through!
