BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – Bismarck Rep. Rick Becker, who founded the Bastiat Caucus in the North Dakota Legislature, has announced he won’t seek another term.
The Bismarck plastic surgeon and former gubernatorial candidate made the announcement on his show “No Apologies with Becker” on the BEK network.
“It came to my realization that the work is never done,” Becker said. “There will never be a time where I can say, ‘I accomplished what I wanted. I can go now.’ Still appreciating the people that came up to me, I am announcing now that I am retiring from the State Legislature at the end of this term, which is in December of this year.”
Becker says his family, businesses, and other obligations have had him contemplating retiring from the legislation for about a year. Becker would not comment on, or rule out, a potential run for a statewide office.
The Bastiat Caucus is an unofficial group of legislators known for ultra-conservative views. They support limited government and spending, and privacy and gun rights.
Becker has served in the House of Representatives for 10 years. He would have faced a challenge for his seat because of legislative district changes.
