MN DNR
| Early ice season walleye can often be found in the same locations as they were late in the open water season. Ideal spots to fish are the remnant weeds and areas with structure. Anglers should set up well before dusk to avoid scattering walleye when they’re most eager to bite, then use aggressive jigging strokes to attract fish.
If you plan to head out, please remember that ice is never 100% safe, and ice conditions can change daily, especially early in the season. Ice conditions can vary greatly from one lake to another, and on the same body of water. It is extremely important that you wear a life jacket, bring along an ice pick and rope, and tell a buddy where you plan to travel. And before dropping a line, brush up on Minnesota’s rules, regulations and other helpful information for fishing.
Due to the current COVID-19 situation, please visit Explore Minnesota’s COVID-19 Information page before traveling. |
