FARGO (KFGO) – The city commission will be asked Monday to consider ending the city wildlife management program.
Police Chief Dave Zibolski will recommend commissioners eliminate the urban bow hunting program. It started more than 15 years ago in several city parks along the Red River to contain the growing number of deer in the city. The police department manages the program.
Several months ago, a study group was formed and a public hearing was held after Zibolski said the harvest rates were low, the program was no longer effective, and created a public safety threat in the hunting areas. Commissioner John Strand says he is leaning toward supporting the recommendation to end the program.
Zibolski says he has received petitions containing more than 300 names, both from city and regional residents who support the recommendation to eliminate the bow hunting program.
Zibolski also says the program is time-consuming for the officers who manage the hunt.
