UND has had at least one player selected in every draft since 1999
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND Athletics)– Incoming freshman defenseman Brent Johnson was selected in the third round (80th overall) by the Washington Capitals in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday afternoon.
“It’s been a dream come true for sure,” said Johnson. “I’ve been working for this moment for my entire life and it’s amazing moment. There were a lot emotions, but a special moment for sure.”
The Frisco, Texas, native earned All-USHL Second Team honors last season with Sioux Falls after posting 32 points in 47 games from the blue line, where he led all Stampede defensemen in points (32), goals (11) and assists (21). Johnson broke the team goal-scoring rookie record for a defenseman with his point total. Prior to joining the Stampede, he scored 34 points in 47 games with Little Caesars 16-U AAA during the 2019-20 season.
Johnson will become the first Texas native to play hockey at North Dakota. UND has had at least one player selected in every NHL draft since 1999.
