BROOKLYN CENTER, MINN. – The Minnesota State High School League will be adding girls postseason wrestling next year. The league Representative Assembly approved the girls wrestling division on a 44-to-4 vote Tuesday but rejected the addition of boys volleyball as a league-sanctioned activity.
League executive director Erich Martens says the decision to offer girls in wrestling the chance to compete for individual honors in their own postseason division is a big step. He notes that Minnesota joins North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Missouri by giving girls wrestlers this opportunity.
During the 2019-2020 season, 153 girls in Minnesota participated in high school wrestling. The amendment to add boys volleyball fell two votes shy of passage.
