FARGO, N.D. (KFGO) – By August, Fargo police officers will begin using body cameras. The $2.8-million purchase approved by the city commission is paid for with CARES Act funds.
The purchase includes new tasers that will use the same software package as the cameras. Police Chief Dave Zibolski says he required that the cameras come with certain, automated triggers.
He says there are some systems without triggers and when officers are under stress or in a life-threatening situation, the last thing the officer is thinking about is pushing the button.
Zibolski says the triggers on the new system are activated when an officer draws their pistol or taser, removes a rifle from their vehicle, or the vehicle lights are turned on.
He says officers will also have to turn on their body cameras when dispatched to any call. He says it will become “habit.” Training for officers will begin in early July.
