FARGO, N.D. (KFGO) – Counterfeit money circulating through the F-M Metro is nothing new but you might be surprised by the numbers.
Fargo police spokesperson Jessica Schindeldecker says there hasn’t been any recent “uptick” in fake money in Fargo but the flow is steady. There were 19 cases reported in December and 11 cases in January.
Schindeldecker says it’s essential before any money is accepted to double-check to make sure it’s real currency and not counterfeit as a loss can be a threat retailers can’t afford. If a business accepts fake money in payment for merchandise or services, they lose the face value of the money they received plus any goods or services they provided to the customer who paid with the counterfeit bill.
In some cases, local businesses have stopped accepting large denomination currency after being victimized with fake money.
