FARGO. N.D (KFGO) – On a 3-2 vote, the Fargo City Commission approved keeping the city mask mandate in place until at least February 18 at certain businesses to help keep the coronavirus under control. The state mask mandate, which has no penalty, expired January 18.
Commissioner Dave Piepkorn, who once again voted against the mandate, along with Commissioner Tony Gehrig said Fargo’s mask mandate causes confusion, infringes on people’s rights and should be dropped.
Piepkorn said the continued fall in COVID-19 cases in Cass County does not justify the mandate which he called “baloney.”
Mayor Tim Mahoney disagreed. He said the hope is that the numbers continue to go down but the way the virus works, “if you anticipate too soon, sometimes things go back up.”
Commissioner Arlette Preston said Fargo Cass Public Health recommended the mask mandate be kept in place until more vaccinations are completed. She said a decision on the mandate can be revisited in two weeks.
