- North Dakota had its own “Stop the Steal” rally, attended by John Hoeven, who took to the podium and spread lies about election fraud in other states. According to Hoeven, the people of any state that did not vote the way North Dakota voted do not deserve to have their votes counted. Pretty ironic for a Senator from a state that enjoys a huge electoral college advantage. Hoeven, who never misses an opportunity to rant about states’ rights and remind people that the states do everything right, apparently finds it inconvenient to believe in states’ rights when the result is something Trump does not like.
- Then the big dodge on the electoral college vote came when Hoeven said that “After the recent election however, many North Dakotans and Americans remain concerned about irregularities in the presidential election, particularly in regard to mail-in voting. That’s why I support establishing a committee to examine the election ….” Senator Hoeven says this without providing one scrap of evidence of election fraud that has not been considered and rejected by a court.
- Man-up Hoeven, if you want an example of real political courage and common sense, look to Mitt Romney who asked a simple question “Has ambition so eclipsed principle?”
- In Hoeven’s case, it is not ambition, because he appears to have none, but cowardice. For Hoeven’s ego, he needs to keep his favorability at 70% even if his inaction helps destroy democracy. Cannot stay at 70% if you speak truth to Trump or to your constituents.
- Hoeven may ask: “What could a committee investigation hurt?” Again, I turn to Senator Romney who rejected additional investigations by telling his colleagues that if losing 60+ lawsuits did not convince those that Hoeven says are “concerned,” a politically appointed commission or committee will not resolve the concerns. Romney rightfully said that the best way to end this is to tell the truth…Trump lost the election.
- Hoeven should also be mindful of the warning of his leader Mitch McConnell that questioning this election is not a “harmless political gesture.” The consequences were on full display on January 6th.
- So Senator Hoeven, it is not too late, do one thing today that takes courage, go to a podium, speak the truth to North Dakota and say UNEQUIVOCALLY that Biden won the election fair and square.
