HORACE, N.D. (KFGO) – Lola is safe and back with her owner. The chocolate labrador retriever was rescued from the icy Sheyenne River in Horace around 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters from the Rural West Fargo Fire Department responded after the dog was spotted floundering in the water. Two of the volunteer firefighters, equipped with specialized cold water suits, jumped in the river and were able to get Lola to shore.
Cass County Deputy Sheriff Craig Keller says the Sheyenne River is not completely iced over. It’s mostly open, with ice chunks floating in the middle, which the dog was able to crawl onto.
Brought to shore by the firefighters, Lola was put in a deputy’s squad vehicle to warm up and was reunited with her happy owner.
There’s a good chance lab would not have survived had it not been for a woman walking in the area who spotted the dog in distress, called 911, and the quick response of the firefighters who saved Lola.
