FARGO, N.D. (KFGO) – The Fargo School Board voted unanimously to drop the name of Woodrow Wilson High School and seek a new name. Those urging the removal of the former president’s name was because of his racist history.
The school board organized a committee that sought community input before a decision was made. That was done by a survey. Board member Nickie Gullickson said 253 people responded. 37.7% opted to keep the Woodrow Wilson name. 61.3% wanted to rescind the name.
The school district has had a policy for naming schools but it didn’t include the renaming of a school. That policy also has been updated. She said, “the process can be easily followed for years should something like this come up again.”
The search for a new name for the high school will start immediately. The name change should be in place for the start of the 2021-22 school year.
