EAGLE BUTTE, SD (KFGO) – The chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe is calling for the removal of Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
Tribal Chairman Harold Frazier calls Mount Rushmore a “brand on our flesh.” Frazier says when tribal members look at the monument, they see the faces of men “who lied, cheat and murdered innocent people whose only crime was living on land they wanted to steal.”
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem says the men on Mount Rushmore “helped make America the greatest country in history.” Noem says Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt weren’t perfect, but she says Americans “can learn from their example and work together to accomplish their dreams for our country.”
“When I can remove those faces from our land, I believe I would not be alone” Frazier said.
President Trump is scheduled to visit the monument July 3 for an Independence Day fireworks celebration.
