The Red River provides our community with many recreational opportunities that are good for our physical and mental health. Below are some ideas on ways to enjoy it while we are still trying to slow the spread of Covid-19. There really is something for everybody!
Canoe and Kayak Rentals
River Keepers and Moorhead Parks and Recreation partner in the Canoe and Kayak Rentals at Hjemkomst Landing. We are open on Tuesdays from 5-8 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Please see the new guidelines in the picture to the right.
In addition, the Fargo Park District has kayak rentals at Lindenwood Park.
Riverfront Cleanups
River Keepers works with Moorhead Parks and Recreation and the Fargo Park District to coordinated clean up along the riverfront by volunteers. There are a few extra Covid-19 safety guidelines in place. Get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather we’ve been having AND help protect the Red River. To volunteer, email kimberly@riverkeeers.org or call 701.356.8915.
Lil’ Fisherman’s Derby & Clinic
This ‘normal’ event has been cancelled but check out the Facebook Event page for training videos from FM Walleyes AND stop by to pick up a bag of resources for your favorite lil’ fishing buddy at our Pick Up and Go event on Tuesday, June 23 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at Dike East.

Trails and Parks
Fargo Park District and Moorhead Parks and Recreation have many miles of paved riverfront trails running through their many beautiful riverfront parks. Check out the FM Metro Area Bikeways Map at fmmetrocog.org/fmbikemap.
In addition, there are 10 miles of single lane mountain bike dirt trails along the river with more being built. Follow FM Trailbuilders on Facebook for trail conditions.
Don’t have your own bike, no problem, Lindenwood Park has various types of bikes for rent.
Be creative and come up with a different focus each day you go out:
* How about a History Hike? The Historical and Cultural Society has this great self guided walking guide….riverkeepers.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Self-Guided-History-Tour.pdf
* How about bird watching?
* How about a senses walk….What do you hear? See? Feel? Smell?
* How about an Animal Homes Hike along the banks of the Red River. Search trees for holes, bird nests, squirrel nests made of clumps of leaves, spider webs and insects. Are there other signs of wildlife?
* How about a Tree Hike? Make some bark rubbings. How many different species of trees do you see? Are the barks smooth or rough? What shape are their leaves?
* How about a River Music Hike? How many sounds can you hear?
Disc Golf
Moorhead has a riverfront disc golf course at Memorial/Riverfront Park and Fargo has riverfront disc golf courses at Trollwood, Oak Grove, and Iwen Park!
