Tax Preparation
Larry Magid, CBS Tech Correspondent, says he can’t tell you what is “best”, but he can give you some tips.
Turbo Tax is the software he uses. And, he says he has gone back and forth between the online version and the CD version. The advantage of the CD version is more than one person can use it, so if you are preparing multiple returns, you will only be charged once for the software. However, the online version does provide more conveniences.
Other reputable softwares include H&R Block and Tax Act. They are all approved by the IRS. And, depending on your situation, you may be able to use these for free.

Larry also reminds you to use “good technology hygiene” and only use the links provided by the IRS (the website should end in .gov).
Nothing is 100% safe, but you can be comfortable using a service or software that is meeting industry standards.
And, you are always better off filing early to hopefully avoid the scammers. Last year, the IRS says fraudulent returns tried to get $3.1 billion in refunds.
