Mr. Fix-It around the KFGO studios is none other than Tim Noteboom. Tim spent decades as a contractor and home inspector – he’s seen it all. The first Wednesday of the month, Tim takes to the KFGO airwaves and provides valuable knowledge to those seeking answers about their homes. From the foundation to the roof peak, Tim has an answer for you.
Tim gets some gutter questions at the beginning of this episode.
If you have a gutter that is leaking near the joints or at the end, a simple solution is to clean out the area, wipe it dry and apply a gutter product that is meant to seal cracks. The life of a gutter can be greatly extended by simply taking care of the small problems as they occur. A tube of caulking can seal the gutter and prevent further run off to unintended areas. Making sure the area you are working with is clean and dry is VERY important.
Along those lines, when cleaning a gutter most people use a ladder. Tim warns that the more pitch you set the ladder with the greater the pressure you are putting on the gutter. Too much pressure from angle or weight of the person climbing can damage gutters quickly. It also presents a safety hazard by climbing on an area that could give way and cause an unstable climbing section. There are some simple ladder accessories you can add to increase the stability and amount of weight the ladder can take.
The listeners keep the action at the roof, questions came in regarding replacing sections of shingles without taking down the entire roof, what can be done to keep the plumbing vents from freezing up.
