Tim Noteboom spent years as a contractor – remodeling homes all over the valley – before he moved into the home inspection business. He’s been in the tightest of attics to the darkest of basements. There isn’t much he hasn’t seen.

Tim spends parts of the show discussing the opportunities home owners have to improv energy efficiency that can also save them money. Obviously, items like windows can greatly improve your heating/cooling bills…but are a steep price to pay.
How about your hot water heater?!?! Over time, a water heater that is just left to sit and work fills with sediment. After years of not draining the sediment, the collection at the bottom can amount to enough that it covers the heating element. This cuts down on the efficiency as well as the total amount of water it can hold. Pro tip – if you get a new water heater, drain it once a year. Keep up and you will remove the sediment before it causes a problem BUT you can’t just start draining after a few years of not draining. The sediment can get stuck inside the valve and cause a huge headache. Remember the tip for the next time you replace that water heater!
Mr. Fix-It also explains some of the new styles of skylights that improve the quality and take out the condensation element. Have you ever been to a house that has a drippy skylight in the winter? That is most likely caused by condensation forming on the inside of the glass – especially because skylights are typically found in kitchen and bathrooms where there is higher humidity. The new skylights balance how light enters and temperature is controlled from the top to the ceiling. If you have an old style skylight – it might be worth talking to a contractor about putting in a newer style.
