Continuing from his last stop into the studio, Mr. Fix-It reminds folks NOT to run their air exchanger during the summer months or when the humidity is high. Bringing sticky, wet air from outside to the inside of your house is not a good idea. Air exchangers are great for late fall through early spring. They will bring in fresh air and help keep the humidity in your home at bay.

Also covered on the furnace side of things, a caller wanted to know about getting rid of allergens in the HVAC system. Tim’s advice includes looking into an ultraviolet bulb to kill airborne particles, keeping a quality filter in place and exchanged regularly as well as keeping duct areas clean. Especially if you have shedding pets. Even animals confined to one area of the home can lead to hair and dander all over through the air conditioning and heating channels.

Mr. Fix-It also answered a question about gutter guards. A listener texted in about his shop space gutters filling with leaves. He has tried the vinyl guards that go over the top of the gutters, but the ice dams ruin the guards over winter. Tim suggest trying the product that looks like a black spongey triangle. The foam style allows water to go through and can be squished or locked into ice without damage to the material. Great for our neck of the woods.

What about putting a towel bar up in the bathroom? Seems simple, right? It can be – but not if you don’t want to rehang and re-drywall later on. Getting a good anchor, skipping the ones you are given by the manufacturer, and figuring out the amount of use is the first step. Items like toggles or heavy duty anchors can help. The bar might only weigh 5lbs, but think of towels (especially wet ones!) and the pulling that this towel bar will receive – add some extra weight qualifications. A five pound bar could use a 50lb anchor. Odds are you won’t find studs on both sides, but if you can get at least one side screwed into a stud, it will be all the better.
