Lucas Beneke, the IT guy for KFGO, is getting married. He still has about half of the wedding to pay off. Thousands of dollars still pending – but he has a plan. He will be selling a portion of his Magic: The Gathering card collection.
If you have seen kids playing a game with fireballs, spells, wizards and creatures, odds are they were playing Magic. Created in 1993, you collect cards in the same way people collect baseball cards and then build a deck to use when you take on another player. Over the years more than 20,000 card designs have been released. Some had printings of thousands and some had smaller printing. POOF. An economy of supply and demand has been created.
In October, Lucas will travel to Minneapolis, MN to a major Magic convention to offer his rare cards to dealers or competitive players in an effort to raise the last amount of money he needs to pay off his wedding.
He’s not alone. There are collectors from across the globe who sell cards that are worth enough to put a down payment on a house or retire completely. To person A, these might be nothing more than colorful cardboard – but to person B, they are worth big money because of how rare they are.
The next time you clear out your kids’ room or threaten to throw away their “silly little cards,” know that you might be holding early retirement in your hands!
