Matt Flory, from the American Cancer Society, tells us on the 44th Anniversary of the “Great American Smoke Out” how it all got started. It was a brilliant social-norming campaign brought to you by a newspaper in Monticello, Minnesota. They printed the names of people who had agreed to quit smoking for one day, to not only keep them accountable, but to show them support.
Kick the Habit!
The American Cancer Society wants smokers
ready to kick the habit to stick with effective and proven methods for quitting. Flory says e-cigarettes or vaping is not an approved
method for smoking cessation. The FDA has approved several methods of smoking cessation and Flory encourages you to reach out to your healthcare provider for support.
Also, Flory says the decision and the process of quitting is difficult and it’s important to seek support.
Benefits
Flory also says there are some immediate health benefits for those who quit! Within the first 20 minutes, your heart rate and your blood pressure drop. Within the first year, your heart disease risk is half. And within 5 years, your cancer risk starts to drop.
