Don Carey, our favorite “Bug Man” from NDSU, joins the It Takes Two crew to talk about all things BUGS.
Mosquito control
(…and other interesting facts)
The most important mosquito control we do is the stuff most of us don’t see. Carey says that mosquitoes spend most of their life in water, so the hard work is being done in standing water before the mosquitoes are even flying around our backyards.
And, did you know that mosquitoes mouth are like “saws”… when they bite us, it’s actually more of a sawing motion. And, for a little thrill, you can tighten your muscle when a mosquito is biting you and watch them explode!? The mosquitoes mouth is more like a hook and your blood pressure can cause the mosquito to explode because that hook like mouth will not allow them to fly away!
Also in this episode: questions about the extinction of monarchs, why alfalfa is a ‘mean and nasty’ plant, the one place in the world you can find venus fly traps (and it’s in the US!), raising walking sticks, horse flies, ants and more!
You don’t want to miss this intriguing conversation!
