In this podcast: Hear from Darcy Kasprowicz about the “SafeTY Jacket” program!
The co-founder of the North Dakota Autism Center in Fargo, Darcy Kasprowicz, worked with her chamber of commerce leadership group to create “SafeTY Jacket which provides ID bracelets, key chains, car decals and medical alert kits to families of those with autism. Her brother, Ty, is autistic.
“A family has a member of their family with autism, because some of them are wanderers, sometimes they get lost, if they’re enrolled in this program the family can notify us of the missing family member and we’re able to push that information out through this jacket that we have in our law enforcement data program,” said Fargo Police Chief Dave Todd at the announcement of the program.
“That contains a picture of the individual, the emergency contact information for this individual, what they respond to, what they don’t respond to, some are non-verbal, some don’t respond well to touch, it gives the officers cues on how to approach people in order to keep that situation safe and get them to where they need to be,” Todd added.
Initially, “SafeTy Jacket” is only available in Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo and Cass and Clay Counties. The parents or guardians of people registered with the autism center can sign up.
Money to start the program came from Cornerstone and Blackridge Banks, other local businesses and The Chamber.
Cass Co. Sheriff Jesse Jahner, Clay Co. Sheriff Mark Empting, Darcy Kasprowicz, Moorhead Police Chief Shannon Monroe, Fargo Police Chief Dave Todd, West Fargo Police Chief Heath Jahnke attend “SafeTy Jacket” announcement event. (KFGO News)
