North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem joins It Takes 2 to talk about the specifics of legislation sitting in Congress relating to robocalls.
The legislation, sponsored by both South Dakota Senator Thune and North Dakota Senator John Hoeven, would take some big steps in trying to stop illegal robocalls.
Included in the legislation:
– Requiring telephone service providers to adopt authentication technology to verify legitimate calls before putting them through.
– Increase the FCC’s maximum penalty from $1500 to $10,000!
– Extend the statute of limitations to give the FCC up to three years after a robocall is placed to pursue violators.
– Require the FCC to adopt rules to help protect subscribers from receiving unwanted calls or text messages.
Stenehjem says that robocall complaints outnumber all other complaints into his office. And, encourages you to reach out to your representatives in Congress to support and pass this legislation.
