Mining for Helium in ND?
We are in a global helium shortage. (Remember the news of Party Cities closing their doors?)
However, it seems North Dakota may have the resource everyone is worried about runnning out of… a lot of the helium is mixed with natural gas. So, places that produce natural gas, often have a significant amount of helium that can be separated out.
And, in North Dakota, a few sites have been tested for some high amounts of helium.
In this podcast: Dr. Gregory Cook, Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at North Dakota State University, join Amy & JJ to explain.
While Dr. Cook wasn’t familiar with the infrastructure needed, he didn’t suspect that fractioning out the helium would be much different than any other gas.
“Helium is so important for your everyday life,” says Dr. Cook. Medical imaging, scientific research and airbags, just to name a few.
And, at the rate we use it, there is a possibility we could run out.
