Our neighbors to the north are enjoying a long weekend and some celebrating today!
In this podcast: Richard Cloutier, from CJOB in Winnipeg, joins It Takes 2 to talk all things “Canada Day”…
The New Generation is “Loud & Proud”
Unlike the United States, Cloutier says, “… we did not breakaway from an entity, it was a smooth transition into nationhood.”
And, while their celebrations of independence will look a lot like our 4th of July celebrations this week, Cloutier says it wasn’t always like that.
He remembers a time when he started in radio having talk shows about, “why can’t we (Canada) show the same type of patriotism as the United States on the 4th of July?”… And, he says, over the last decade or so, that culture has changed.
There’s a whole generation of Canadians who are “loud and proud”. Tens of thousands of Canadians will be at the Forks in Winnipeg celebrating with food and fireworks.
Food & Music
The food during Canada Day celebrations looks like our 4th of July, BBQ’s, burgers, hot dogs and chips… but with a side of poutine. As Cloutier said, “it’s had quite the resurgence.”
And, don’t forget all of those Canadian artists, many of whom local radio stations will be playing and some who will be coming back for shows around Canada Day.

Oh Canada!
