Is Hanukkah the Jewish Christmas? Why are the colors blue and white? What is a dreidel? How can someone who isn’t Jewish experience Hanukkah in a respectful way? Do you get upset when folks wish you a “Merry Christmas?”
We asked all these questions and more!
In this podcast: Rabbi Jamie Serber, from Temple Beth El of Fargo, joins Amy Iler and guest co-host Pastor Jack Carlson, to talk about the traditions of Hanukkah.
Hanukkah is not “the Jewish Christmas”, in fact, their Jewish new year in September (Rosh Hashanah) is a much bigger celebration. And, gifts didn’t really start in the United States until the 1950’s.
And, a pro-tip from Rabbi Serber: BernBaums in Fargo has great potato latkes, if you want to try some traditional Hanukkah food!
