North Dakota is giving the cities and counties local control to change speeding fines. The disparities between cities and counties won’t be too severe, as the ND House amended law to restrict fee-raising ability to twice the state’s levels.
In this podcast: Fargo Police Chief Dave Todd says this, “overall a good thing” but does admit that this is just a baby step.
“When you give control back to local entities… I think it’s good,” Todd says, “… we have different circumstances, we have different population levels and traffic flow.”
As of now, 1-15 miles per hour over the speed limit, it’s just $1 per mpr. ( If you go through a stop light, stop sign or you fail to yield, it’s just a $20 ticket in the city of Fargo, even if it results in a crash.)
So, while he admits this seems like just a “baby step,” the control back to cities and counties is a good thing.
And, as to whether or not he will consider bringing back motorcycle patrols? Chief Todd says the department just doesn’t have the staff to support it, but isn’t ready to get rid of them just yet. They are still used for special events.
