Eight years ago the North Dakota legislature passed a bill to require all North Dakota schools to develop and implement a bullying policy. Now, (if signed by the Governor), SB 2181 will update the law to include cyber-bullying.
The bill revises the definition of bullying to include communication received or sent by students on electronic devices outside of school, which “places the student in actual and reasonable fear” of harm or damage to a student’s property.
In this podcast: Mrs. Beth Slette, West Fargo Superintendent, joins IT2 to talk about bullying policies.
Slette says that cyber-bullying is already included in their bullying policy and she hopes they are already following a lot of what the new law will require.
While the bill also requires the district notify law enforcement whether the incident happened on or off school property, Slette hopes parents can also assist. She encourages the help of parents and says a quick scroll through your child’s phone will indicate if they are being bullied or are a bully.
