Common Cold vs. Allergies
If you are experiencing that “cold” year after year, Dr. Eng says that is a good sign you should be tested.
Dr. Eng says most of the patients he sees have tried every over-the-counter medication and are ready for something stronger to kick allergy symptoms.
At what age can you be tested?
Dr. Eng says for outdoor allergies, it’s best to wait until a child is 5 years old. And then, re-testing if symptoms reoccur. That time until 5 years old is called a sensitization period.
However, children as young as 8 or 9 months may be tested for indoor allergies, ie: dust, cats, dogs, etc.
Can you develop an allergy later in life?
Yes! “We see this a lot in college students, ” says Dr. Eng, “They grow up with a cat, go to college for 4 years, and when they come back to their parents home, they have all of a sudden developed a cat allergy!”
Asthma and allergy symptoms can go hand-in-hand.
Is local honey good for allergies?
While some have found anecdotal evidence of this, Dr. Eng says there has been no study to prove this is effective.
