Bruce Bekkerus from A-1 Automotive fields a lot of questions everyday. He has seen makes and models of almost any car and he shares his decades of knowledge with the KFGO listeners once a month during “The Mechanic Is In” during It Takes Two.
ON THIS EPISODE:
Bruce talks a lot with listeners curious about winter tires. It was such a popular discussion that staff members even stopped in to ask additional questions after the broadcast. For the full benefit, listen to the podcast, but here are the bullet points for winter tires.
1. Winter/Snow and Ice rated tires DO make a huge difference. If you have only used an all-season tire or just never bothered to switch your regular tires to winter specific tires, you will notice a huge difference when driving on snow and ice. In fact, Bruce mentioned that those who have rear wheel drive vehicles they do not trust during the winter could be very surprised at how much traction they will find when using a winter tire specifically.
2. Change all four tires to winter tires. Don’t cheap out. This way you can rotate as needed and will actually get a longer life out of the tires themselves.
3. Don’t dawdle when it gets warm. Once the snow starts to melt and Spring weather hits, get those soft rubber tires off. You can chew through them quickly when the pavement gets hot. You can see thousands of winter miles on these specialty tires, but they wont last long if you keep them on all year round.
We also discuss the possible cause for heating elements, getting a second opinion and why you should always test before you diagnose the problem.
