The State of Minnesota is officially telling drivers not to hang out in the left lane!
The new road safety law dictates that drivers who don’t make way in the left hand lane could be fined, with the hefty fee of $125.
How many times have you needed to pass a slow moving vehicle in the right hand land only to find another slow moving vehicle in the left hand lane. This is the basis of the law. If you are traveling at the speed limit and stuck behind two vehicles traveling BELOW the speed limit and blocking both lanes – the person in the left hand lane could face a fine.
It should be noted, this law DOES NOT encourage or condone speeding of any kind. You still need to cap your speed at the limit.
The cleanup of the left hand lane is also an effort to help patrol vehicles and emergency services who need an unobstructed path to their destination.
Discretion is the key term as the State Patrol will be able to use common sense when pulling an individual over. Things like blowing snow drifts and passenger safety can be addressed before a ticket is issued.
Remember that this law is meant to keep all of us safe on the roadway!
