As summer winds down and Labor Day approaches, we hit a time of the year where a lot of listeners have questions for KFGO’s plant expert, retired horticulturalist Dave Decock. Every Thursday, during the growing season, from 1:00pm tp 2:00pm Dave answers YOUR questions on The Mighty 790am KFGO!

Are you getting a weird fungus growing on the side of your tree…like this?
Or how about some pickling cucumbers that are fat on one end, but skinny on the other? Most likely a pollination problem and nothing to be done for the rest of your harvest. 
Squirrels have been chewing on the bark of a listener’s tree – Dave has a quick solve, but it’s not for everyone…live traps. Use half an apple smeared with peanut butter and relocate those pests from your backyard.
Another listener planted new grass and thinks they may have over watered. Worried that the rust from the water may have killed off a lot of grass, Dave took care of those fears. Rust in water won’t hurt your lawn, after it dries the rust should just blow off in the rain. The over watering is probably why the grass didn’t take. Unfortunately, Dave said the listener will need to kick up the dirt and reseed.
If you are looking to add something out of the ordinary or special for your garden, be careful. Dave notes that a lot of the specialty flowers or perennials can be tough to winter or get growing vigorously in our area. Sometimes that “pop” of color can lead to a lot of heartache as you try to get them established.
