Dave Decock is the prince of pruning, the lord of lilacs and the master of mums. Dave is a retired horticulturalist who knows the soil of the Red River Valley like the back of his hand. Each week, during growing season, he takes questions from listeners via phone or text message.

Dave opens up the season with talking about what can happen during the winter months when you can’t see below the snow. For example, did we have enough snow cover to protect the plants underneath? What about rabbits? Those little critters treat your trees like a buffet, but be prepared to see the tell tale signs of munching higher up on the trunk and low hanging branches.
Lots of talk and questions about lilacs. Dave advises that if you prune lilacs at this time of year, which is absolutely fine, you won’t get any flowers this year. They will bloom again the next year, so if you don’t HAVE to prune them, wait until the fall if you still want to enjoy the sight and smell of lilac.
Dave also discusses the difference between bare root trees and potted trees. Basically, it’s the exact same plant – but the bare tree is less costly because as soon as the nursery gets them in stock, you get them. With bare root, you will need to be ready to plant at a moment’s notice.
