Well rounded. That is the perfect way to describe the Entertainment Industries and Technology students at MSUM. The young people who dream of getting into the music, movie or entertainment business start their major and quickly find out that adding accounting, communications, science and other minors give them a leg up on the other industry hopefuls.
Ryan Jackson, and educator in the EIT major, joins Amy Iler and JJ Gordon to talk about how the EIT department prepares the next generation of show business leaders for a career that is constantly changing.
(Ryan Jackson, professor at MSUM)
Someone who understands show business jargon AND general accounting jargon will go farther faster, according to Jackson. Especially in the evolving world of copyright. When he was asked how things have changed since he attended MSUM with a dream of music production, he quickly informs us that the technology has changed, but the art of the craft remains the same. Even though you deal with a digital multi-track soundboard, you still need to train your ear to understand what these changes mean. You need the quality recording first, digital tweaks second.
How about things like Youtube or Instagram? These are the new “norms” in the entertainment industry that are breaking down the walled gardens previous generations kept so secret. You don’t have to get your demo into the hands of a major producer by hiding in her trashcan. You can simply upload your tracks onto Soundcloud and build a massive following on your own, from anywhere.
Getting their students to add minors or electives that create a more well rounded person is a cornerstone of what the educators at MSUM believe will sky rocket the success of their students. If you have a student who is interested in live music – pushing them to get into construction or physics classes will help them understand how the shape, height, temperature, etc… of a space can change the output. If you were interviewing someone to run your venue – who looks better?
