In mid 2017, North Dakota announced it would follow suit, as many other states did, in regards to holding online retailers accountable for sales tax – pending the decision on the Wayfair v. South Dakota court case. Since then, more than 2,500 businesses have registered with the state Tax Commissioner and have begun paying into the state coffers.
North Dakota Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger tells It Takes Two that they have collected more than $2,000,000.00 and that doesn’t even include all of the Black Friday, Cyber Monday or holiday season shopping.
Brick and mortar stores in ND are in support of this tax as it levels the playing field in a time when more and more customers are tending to opt for online transactions for items ranging from toilet paper to tractor tires.
