Michael French, PhD, is a professor of Health Economics at the University of Miami and recently co-authored a study on whether or not tattoos are as concerning to employers when considering a new hire. The current studies available are over a decade old and this new study has some surprising insight into current hiring policies!
For a long time, tattoos – especially visible tattoos – have been thought of as a “red flag” when hiring for the bulk of jobs in the market. Tattoos have been seen as a form of rebellion and therefore have shaped corporate policies on whether or not a business wants to be associated with something seen as counter-culture. This is a VERY outdated way of looking at tattoos.
In 2018, tattoos are much more common. Having several tattoos or visible tattoos is no longer seen as a negative by employers. Finding quality and qualified applicants is getting harder and harder – businesses need to be competitive. One way they can get the jump on the office down the street is to remove restrictions during the hiring process when it comes to tattoos or piercings.

Dr. French notes that this study is just the tip of the iceberg. The next step may include using sophisticated equipment to record where the eye glances when presented with a picture of an individual. Is the eye immediately drawn to a visible tattoo or does something like a heart with the word MOM inside not what it used to be when sizing someone up for the first time?
