North Dakota State University Press has published some amazing works by local and regional authors and you have the chance to meet them at Barnes & Noble. Get a book signed and hear a reading from folks like author and historian Tom Isern.
Tom uses the prairie as the backdrop to share the stories that have survived from a time that seems far gone to most. The story of a German-Russian woman who died from burns after saving her child from a burning home. It’s tragic, but inspiring. It represents love, paternal instinct, strength and bravery. “Pacing Dakota” is full of these stories from the plains that feature people who are anything but plain.
His work as a historian was clear during our time together, but his viewpoint as a transplant (from Kansas) to North Dakota create an insight that should remind us not to take our history for granted.
