Each week during Foodie Friday, It Takes Two with Amy and JJ features a unique recipe, cooking style or culinary gadget – but this week is all about those page turning cookbooks. Specifically, cookbooks by celebrities.
Hollywood-A listers and those who have taken a hiatus from the spotlight bring family recipes to the pages of their cookbooks, but also let us get a glimpse into their own kitchens.
“Comfort Food” is a term that many of these celebrities use to describe a dish that helps them unwind after a long day shooting the latest blockbuster or a particular recipe that traveled with them from Small Town, USA to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

REESE WITHERSPOON
“Whiskey in a Teacup”
Witherspoon shares recipes that have a Southern kick to them. The book is equal part recipes and charm. This is the type of cookbook that can sit on a coffee table and be enjoyed page by page on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
JOANNA GAINES
“Magnolia Table: A Collection of Recipes for Gathering”
Joanna Gaines and her “Magnolia” brand bring you paint colors, home decor, television shows and now in your kitchen. The recipes range from the simple to more complex. A standard recipe for chocolate chip cookies as well as fried chicken featuring sticky poppy seed jam. This is the cookbook you show your friends, but maybe never even crack open.
CHRISSY TEIGEN
“Hungry For More”
Chrissy Tiegen follows up the immensely successful cookbook “Cravings” with another joyous read that reminds you that food should make you feel better. Using butter, snacks meant to be eaten in bed, pajama pants instead of aprons! Chrissy writes a FUN book. This is cookbook will appeal to 20, 30, 40 something women who like to pair unlikely treats with wine.
SNOOP DOGG
“From Crook to Cook”
Yep, Snoop Dogg even makes the list. Get your inner rap star on while you scan through recipes like Fried Bologna Sandwiches to Lobster Thermidor and Filet Mignon. His partnership with our next author, Martha Stewart, ignited a sensation that food can, TRULY, bring ANYONE together around a table!
MARTHA STEWART
“Cooking School”
Know someone who doesn’t possess a kitchen full of gadgets? A microwave is the standard meal cooker in their home? This cookbook from Martha Stewart is a back-to-basics edition that can be the beginning of an individual’s cookbook collection. Nothing too fancy that a spatula, mixing bowl and oven couldn’t make. Simple without seeming watered down. Great for those who are beginning their lives on their own.
JOHHNY CASH AND JUNE CARTER CASH
“THE CASH & CARTER FAMILY COOKBOOK”
As much about the history of music as it is about recipes. Find out what famed guitarist and folks singer duo Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter Cash made for guests at their home. These guests, we should add, are the names who shaped music/movies/politics into what it is today. Wanna know what U2 likes to eat when they visit a friends’ home…this book can tell you!
FREDDIE PRINZE JR.
“Back to the Kitchen”
Grab a copy of this, ‘She’s All That’ on DVD and make a night of cooking and rom-com-ing with your girlfriends. Prinze takes a lesson from his wife (celebrity cookbook author and actress Sarah Michelle Gellar) and creates a wonderful book that blends stories from his life and career along with a southwest inspired collection of recipes. Raised in Santa Fe and having a mother from Puerto Rico, the book has a lot of heart and a lot of GREAT food!
