In Florida, a man was killed by a large flightless bird. A cassowaries attacked a 75 year old man who raised over 100 exotic birds and animals as a business and now his estate is auctioning off all of the animals – including the bird that took the life of its owner.
(Sally Jacobson in the KFGO studios)
Sally Jacobson from the Red River Zoo joins IT2 with her thoughts on whether or not this animal should be put down after taking a human life. Sally also tells KFGO that the Red River Zoo is part of an exchange program that trades animals with other accredited zoos and would never buy an animal through a private auction. The breeding and health records required by the Red River Zoo are part of the requirements for their Association of Zoos and Aquariums membership.

During the conversation, Sally makes an interesting point that these animals, including the cassowarie in question, shouldn’t be thought of as pets – but livestock. In that context, it makes you think twice about whether or not the animal should be put down.
