Sue Balcom gets a unique experience this summer. She gets to attend the premiere of a documentary based on her book “Women Behind the Plow.” Telling the story of the women who helped their husbands and families settle the harsh upper midwest, Sue found that most women she spoke with are modest.
They have intriguing tales, like the family who arrived just before winter – without enough time to build a house. The family dug a hole in the ground and tipped their wagon over the top. An entire winter spent living in a hole. But those were the circumstances required of the men and women who wanted to make farming in the Dakotas their livelihood.
July 31st, 2019 is the world premiere of the documentary of the same name as Sue’s book. The screening is free and the historic Fargo Theater is the perfect venue. The doc uses interviews to tell the story of the women behind the plow – subjects range in age from their 90s to 15 years of age.
