The vacation of a lifetime.
Bailey Blondell is no stranger to traveling. In fact, she loves the adventure so much that she now uses her expertise to help others plan trips across the country and throughout the globe.
Oktoberfest has been near the top of her “Must Try” lists for a long time and in 2019, she made the trek to Germany with her sister to experience the culture, history…and the beer!
Bailey shares her experiences with the sights and sounds of Oktoberfest. For example, when Oktoberfest opens for the day, the most important task for those waiting at the gates is to claim some space at one of the extremely long tables. Be prepared for a loud horn to signal the opening! You are planning on attending for a lot of hours and those steins are heavy – getting a spot at the table is important. It proves to be even more difficult when you have a group. Seats together can be a premium. If you get split up – never fear – you are bound to make some international best friends on either side of wherever you hunker down.
Something that Bonnie and JJ had never heard of was that Oktoberfest is also a major camping vacation. Tents line fields for what seems like miles. Revelers save money by renting a tent instead of a posh hotel. The tents also give you a closer advantage to getting in line for the opening. The party, of course, continues in the tent villages. If you would like a long rest and maybe a quiet morning to work off that beer and sausage hangover, you might want to consider springing for the hotel option.
THE MUSIC! Yep, it wouldn’t be the grand oompah-pah without some traditional German music. The song Ein Prosit (I Salute You) plays every 15 minutes. You can walk in without ever hearing the song and be singing it like a champ by noon. Bailey also noted that you hear a lot of “Sweet Caroline” and “Country Roads.” These US classics are popular across the world and are incredibly crowd interactive. Whether someone is streaming a Neil Diamond recording or a polka band is doing a cover, you are certain to recognize some of the tunes being sung in almost every language.
How about you foodies out there? The German traditional faire is alive and well inside the tents. You can score those double decker bratwursts or the amazing cheese soup. Oktoberfest may first be associated with beer – but the food is a close second!
Beer. Yep, that category speaks for itself.
The best part of the journey? Bailey says you create lifelong friends while double fisting beer steins and dancing. She met up with friends from Australia and even bumped into some Minnesotans! The bonds of travel and an openness to meeting new people will pay off with great stories and new adventures.
We should also mention…Bailey had just returned home the night before and was willing to fight through jet lag to share her experiences with us!
