FARGO, N.D. – A Cavalier man who died in the 1941 attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor is finally coming home.
Navy Radioman, Second Class, Floyd Wells was only 24 when he died on the USS Arizona. Although the family knew he had been killed at Pearl Harbor, he was unidentified and they say it was like a “missing link” for the family for nearly 80 years.
Family members had sent in some of their DNA to the Navy back in 2017 to identify Floyd. They received word recently that his identity was confirmed. Floyd Wells remains were returned by plane Monday night at Fargo’s Hector International Airport with a military escort. He is being buried Tuesday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery south of Mandan.
Floyd’s nephew, Curtis Wells, says many of his family members live out of state but not a single one hesitated about making the trip to North Dakota.
