FARGO, ND (KFGO) – The Fargo city commission plans to “toughen up” taxi cab regulations in Fargo and will hold meetings next month to discuss the changes with transportation companies. City Auditor Steve Sprague, who handles the licensing, told city commissioners earlier this week the original ordinance had very specific details about requirements for taxi operations.
But he says state law doesn’t allow local regulation of Uber and Lyft, and when they came to town, the taxi ordinance was repealed and a new version was put in place but it dropped many of the requirements for taxi cabs. That has left the door open for so-called “gypsy cabs” which are not regulated.
Sprague says city leaders plan a meeting early next month with the taxi companies to come up with a new ordinance that can work.
