GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Work is underway on the demolition of Memorial Union on the University of North Dakota campus. A part of the older section of the building was demolished on Wednesday. Once the entire building is razed construction will begin on a new student center.
The North Dakota Board of Higher Education in July approved the issuance of up to 80-million dollars in bonds to finance the new building. The actual demolition and construction were put on hold in late June in order to give interim U-N-D President Dr. Joshua Wynne time to review the project.
Last November students voted to raise student fees to pay off the bonds. Construction of the new Memorial Union is expected to take nearly two years to complete.
